Progress on several fronts today. Injecting internal fillets in the 3" MAC Zodiac using a syringe and plastic tube - less messy than the others have been. Finished repainting a red stripe on the LOC Hi-Tech nose cone, it had peeled when originally unmasking the full-airframe-length stripe, and repainting an aligned same-width stripe has been harder than I expected. And got another coat of white on the Estes Starlight, hopefully good enough to call done!

I spent the weekend designing and printing a 3D-printed Nike Smoke and finally finished an hour ago. It's built on a 3" LOC tube with 38mm and 54mm options. The nosecone is beastly, split into three pieces. I put the STL files and a sim file up on Printables. There's nothing much in the way of a description yet, but the design/build thread is here. I will expand on it once I start the actual build.

Canada Day launch!
Technically this was yesterday as Canada Day is July 1, but we did it within the last 24 hours so I say fair on a technicality :D

Decided I was tired of casings all over the place so I organized. :) View attachment 653990View attachment 653991View attachment 653992

I have one of those in Kaki, but never made foam cutouts for what it held in airline baggage 😲

I was fretting on the way back home, it did not come out the Baggage chute carousal like it did in Dallas Fort Worth.
I later asked the airline where my baggage case was and they said in the baggage claim office.
It had caught a flight before mine to Detroit, and got there before me and was just circling around the baggage pickup carousal.
So they picked it up and put it in the office.

I don't have to say what was in it do I :D
It did have me concerned for a little while.

I now havevthe motor mount completed for the half scale Esoteric. I drilled 1/2" holes into the top centering ring so I can use all five motor tubes. The holes will allow ejection gases to pass through the top centering ring. Because of this, I applied a coat of epoxy on the bottom of the centering rings to protect it from the ejection charges. Tonight the motor mount gets installed.

Built the first of six research 76/6000 motors for Airfest. I'm keeping busy down here in sunny Arizona, need to make a bunch of motors for two more launches in Colorado this month, then Airfest next month. All my research stuff is down here, next week it's back up to Red River, NM for the rest of the summer.

Started assembling the outside rings onto the Starlight airframe. They were a pain to mask and paint but I liked the red and white scheme I had seen on someone else's model so am trying this.

Got a second coat of white paint on the Estes Vagabond

IMG_5653_Small.jpg

It's a little big for the paint booth, so I am painting it outside in the nice weather and then hanging it by the paint booth with the fan running to cure.

Finally put the roll pattern on my old EZI-65 booster. The payload bay was done over a year ago. Fortunately, I had just enough paint leftover to finish it, and it matches.
The rocket is almost 30 years old and was last launched in 2006. It suffered a hard landing after I put the I-300 delay assembly in backwards.

At Freedom Launch in Orangeburg in '97:

Current status after spraying the booster this evening. Keeping the pattern consistent over the fiberglass patch took some extra care. Not perfect, but good enough. This should fly at GRITS on a decent I or small J.

I may do a short thread to document the repair and restyle.

Cleaned some motor parts from the NOVAAR launch 2.5 weeks ago.

My son flew some LPR plus his Nano Magg on an F24W. I went 6/8:
PML Callisto on a Loki G66LR: perfect flight, Loki Red is louder than I remember. Gs from 30 feet are great!
Aerotech Strong ARM on an AT G64W: nice and high, chute release kept the walk short.

Klima Andromeda on 2xC6-5, 2xB6-6: nice low flight, delays had some separation and there was no overpressurization. Lost my motor retaining washer again, though.
Demon 5 on a Loki J1026CT: maximum impulse for the field, 1800ft on big purple flame.

A Series of Tubes on an AT J401FJ: 2050ft, love the longer-burning black smoke motors.

Cherokee-B (Cherokee-E with a boat tail) on a C11-5: easy up and down, landed right next to my son's Boosted Bertha first stage.
And then we went off the rails a bit.
Turbo Vortico on an AT F24W: hung up on a slightly sticky rail. No damage, but not the fun helicopter noise you usually get.
Sarissa (6-tube elongated King Kraken) on an AT I154J: beautiful up half (love the dark smoke again), but the chute shook out of the chute release at apogee and the increased winds took her away over multiple stands of trees. I'll look again in the winter for my motor case, at least. Neon orange chute should help when there's less green.

Dry-fit a Dragon Rocketry Nuclear Crowbar, aft half pictured.

I haven't built anything in months and I want to change that.
