Ned Patton, Ph.D., P.E.
Accomplished Author, Scientist, Mechanical Engineer and Composite Materials Expert, Dr. Patton has been in the R&D and technology development business for more than 40 years. He has worked at major National Laboratories and Government Labs. His involvement with composite materials dates back at least 35 of those 40 years and was strengthened when he did his Ph.D. work at the University of Delaware.
Since graduating from U of Delaware, his work in technology development has been primarily focused on applications of composites, and he has become something of an expert in the use of composites in deep submergence applications.

Dr. Patton has recently published a book about composites, “The String and Glue of our World”. This book takes the reader on a journey from the beginning of time to the present through the lens of an Engineer and Scientist with more than 40 years of experience, mostly with composite materials. Relating the structures seen in nature, the author explains both the why and the what of composites, where the ideas for them came from, and how Mother Nature has been using these ideas since the beginning of life on this wonderful planet.

Presentation:
Composites 101
“What the heck are these things and what can I do with them?”

In this presentation Dr. Patton will take us from the basics of composite materials, to examples, and then walk through an example project using composite materials, one that you can do at home with readily available materials. Although Dr. Patton is not an active rocketeer, he will focus the presentation on materials and techniques appropriate for amateur rocketeers.
Dr. Patton presents in an informal and friendly way and will have plenty of time to take questions.

Washington Aerospace Club
Washington Aerospace Club is the largest hobby rocketry club in Washington state. Active since 1997 and based in Puyallup, WA, the club has members in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. Washington Aerospace Club (WAC) is dedicated to safely designing, constructing, and flying hobby rockets while learning the underlying science and math that permits them to fly. The club supports all aspects of rocketry including model, mid-power, high-power and amateur rocketry at all levels.

Washington Aerospace Club is a rocketry club affiliated with two national organizations: the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA).

The club meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Museum of Flight and newcomers are always welcome. Meetings are an opportunity to meet other rocketeers, hear and see the latest in the hobby, and share stories and questions concerning projects or designs.
