Wow. Kinda makes sense-ish to a common person like me, but I can't imagine what it really takes to pull stuff like this off. We live in technologically amazing times. Commercial radio started in the US in 1920 (yes, I Googled it). 104 years later we're talking about high-speed data between the Earth and Mars with actual results.
