who won? I’d think you’d need a engine to adjust your orbit.
If I recall correctly, the boss's proposed method was to get enough altitude and maybe speed, not ruling out a much smaller second stage or at least steering thrusters to establish orbit. He was really just talking about getting "enough" muzzle velocity.

The mission specialist won. He was using a fluid dynamic argument against the boss's scheme, which sounded good to me but I wasn't qualified to support or refute. I shut the whole thing down with a much simpler thermodynamic argument.

The solar fusion process supports synthesizing elements up to iron. All the elements heavier than iron that you see around you (copper, silver, gold, etc....) came from more exotic processes including supernovae.
This is because Iron-56 is the most stable known atom. Anything heavier than that, and energy must be added for fusion to occur.* The energy added must be equal to the energy released, were the atoms to split apart again, and we all know how much energy comes out when you split atoms.

*Conversely, anything lighter than Iron-56 releases energy by fusion.
