Stumbled across this documentary today. Found the underwater launching of a model Polaris most interesting (@12 minutes). Can't quite tell how ignition was achieved in the film, but I suspect it was with a fuse.

I launched an Estes rocket from underwater over 50 years ago. I cut a cardboard disk the same diameter as an 18mm motor and punched 2 small holes in it. I put the igniter in the motor, slid the cardboard disk over the igniter leads and glued the disk on the end of the engine. I sealed up the 2 little holes with some glue. I put the launcher underwater and slid the rocket down the launch rod just underwater then launched it quickly. It launched fairly normally.
