I wnt to a ham radio event yesterday, hoping to buy a handheld. Well, they didn't have any for the momey I had. So I now have money to pursue one of my other projects: a Tesla coil.

For those of you who don't know, these are high voltage air-core resonant transformers. You put 15kv in, it amplifies to around 100kv or more. I was going to build it around a 3" piece of PVC, however I decided to use 4" for better effect. If any of you have built a coil before, either PM or email me cause I'd like to get as much information as I can before I start. An auction for one of the components, magnet wire, is on eBay pretty cheap but it ends in 5 days so I'll start building within a week.

A good page for info is https://www.eskimo.com/~billb/tesla/tesla.html

This has hundreds of links to coils and coil-related stuff.

Just got an idea: 12" sonotube

Not anything that's going to happen soon, but it'll stay in my memory....

I can not remember the book I read on, but I know that it had a chapter devoted to the after-effects of a project and I can't remember which experiment it was, or whom designed it. There was supposedly a wave of energy that rolled off of it and came across the ocean. Devastating results from what I remember..

In any case- check this site for a set of 122 foot behemoths..

and a few others..

Tunguska?

Yeah, one of the theories is that Tesla's giant coil (51' diameter, not at all like the LOD ones) did that.

QUestion:

Can anyone recommend what kinda of cable to use to carry these high voltages? I've had a suggestion for RG-8 coax with the HV on the center conductor... Any other ideas?

Did you check the website links I included above?

Surely someone at one of those would be the best resource for proper cable to use. 8)

Cheers,

Tesla experimented with longitudinal electrical (specifically, magnetodielectrical) waves. Maxwell's original equations predicted them. Others wrote them out in order to "simplify" the equations. When Helmholtz visited Tesla at his world's fair dispay, he was amazed that Tesla was not using "Hertz" (oscillating transverse electromagnetic) waves.

Tesla's theories predicted the ability to create an effect such as Tunguska. He claimed to have tested them. One supposition was that he attempted to cause the effect at the north pole while Perry was near there and would then report it. But he missed and chose not to admit to it. Whether this happened or not, he could have done it.

I downloaded WinTesla v5.0.0.1 a few minutes ago and will be using that to design..... Should start construction this wekend. If "starting construction" means drilling a hole in the PVC to accept and hold the end of the secondary wire, it's gonna happen. If it means "building the whole ******* coil", it may happen. Doubtfully. But I'm going to do something this weekend relating to the coil.

:p :p :p :p :p

Well, I did do something relating to the coil this weekend- I bought a length of copper pipe to use for the primary. No real building yet, this primary is gonna be the hardest part cause I need 4 2x4's to support it with 15 notches cut in each of them to support each individual turn, with matching notches cut in the middle so it can be a 2 piece thing that slides together and a lip to hold the secondary straight. I bid on some magnet wire on eBay, got outbid by 25c in the last second :(

Any more comments, anyone?

Get those two by fours, and start cutting! I want pics by next weekend! ;)
