Yellow is a difficult colour. The pigment is less dense than say a red that will cover with 1 coat. Nice job.

I'm betting they applied the yellow first, masked it off using the tube spiral as a guide (edge of the tape abutting the spiral), and then shot the black...

Using the tube spiral as a guide is a good and (in retrospect) obvious idea... provided the spirals haven't been filled (or if the airframe isn't fiberglass).

That is an Idea I could try. But on this one if you zoom in you can see the spirals under the black but yes yellow put on first and black on top. See a bit of black covering the yellow up on the left near nose cone.
